The History of Nicknaming Baseball Teams
Around the turn of the century, teams were often assigned nicknames by local
sportswriters – rather than by the front offices of the teams themselves. This was
before anyone in the front office recognized the potential value of a nickname to help
market a team – and long before anyone in baseball recognized that money could be
made from merchandise sales.
Teams were identified on their uniforms simply by their home city – and, thus,
sportswriters could attach any nickname they thought somehow fairly represented the
team, its fans, or its home town. Thus: the Boston Beaneaters, the Brooklyn Trolley
Dodgers, the St. Paul Apostles, the Pittsburgh Pirates (for having managed to "pirate" a former star of the Philadelphia Athletics).
